Self Assessment and clever PDFs
For 05-06 I was able to use the HMRC free online self-assessment tax form which proved to be very easy to fill in and which did most of the tax calculations automatically. This year I wasn’t able to do this as I needed to fill in the Capital Gains Tax supplement. This supplement isn’t included in the sections available on the HMRC free online [...]
Wish list for www.advancedhtml.co.uk
I’ve been busy adding to my HTML site at www.advancedhtml.co.uk. In the past few weeks I’ve added a search engine page, a page on making money on the internet, and a mini PHP tips page. The HTML site has been largely static for the last few years but now I’m making an effort to both explore new website building techniques and then to [...]

The Onion reports that all online data has been lost following an internet crash. FBI officials have traced to crash to Eric Tipton who had 'more than 35 windows open on his computer at the time of the crash'. More details are here.
iPod dissection
After my first iPod died - a 4th generation 20gb one - I decided to have some fun and see what was in there. There are instructions elsewhere on the web telling you how to dissasemble and put your iPod back together (for battery replacement), but I'm not interested in saving it. The iPod will die! Safety first - if you are going to be [...]
The Exorcist Film Review
Stars: Linda Blair, Max Von Sydow, Ellen Burstyn, Jason Miller Cert 18 When the Exorcist was originally released 25 years ago it caused outrage and panic to the point that certain people needed counselling after seeing it. Compared to films nowadays it is not actually very violent. It is however a very powerful and scary film which is only let [...]
The Truman Show – Film Review
Staring: Jim CarreyCert: PG On hearing about a new Jim Carrey movie the natural reaction is to avoid it at all costs. However after years of staring in mediocre comedy films he has finally got a part in a movie that is not only clever but very enjoyable to watch. Carrey plays Truman Burbank; an ordinary individual who to his great [...]
Will the real Fake Steve Jobs please stay in character?
It is with some sadness that I hear that Fake Steve Jobs (dude, he invented the friggin iPhone), has been unmasked. For many months he’d been giving us the inside scoop direct from inside Apple HQ. As the iPhone hype got bigger, so did the amount of time that we spent slacking off from work to read his blog. Some guy named Brad at the New [...]
Playing with Amazon’s aStore
I've been playing with Amazon's new aStore. Instead of adding each individual book link (that takes your viewer straight to Amazon's main site), you can create an 'aStore' within your own site. You get to choose which books appear with a few simple clicks and you can customise the look of the page. Your website reader can browse your books and add [...]
Setting up a WordPress blog on 1and1
Having decided to start a blog I had two main options for how to do it. Either create a blog using one of the many blog hosting sites, or host it myself on my own 1 and 1 web space. Hosting it myself is clearly the most flexible option, and for a techy like me the most fun. I did a bit of research into different blogging software and WordPress to [...]
